On Wednesday, during our prayer service, we prayed for the needs of our missionaries who are serving the Lord around the world. Over 100 different needs were submitted to us for special prayer. So, just what should we pray for when praying for our missionaries? Paul said…
Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you. And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith. – 2 Thessalonians 3:1-2
Here are four quick focuses that are helpful when praying for missionaries:
→ PRAY, FIRST, FOR THE SPECIFIC NEEDS OF THEIR FAMILY.
Paul said pray for us. A general statement, yes, but should no doubt include the many needs of the missionary family: their marriage, their children, their health, their relationships, their finances, their refreshment, their rest, their growth, etc.
→ PRAY FOR OPEN DOORS TO SPREAD GOD’S WORD IN THEIR CITY.
Paul said that the word of the Lord may have free course. Pray that God’s Word will be spread throughout the city in which these families serve and that unique doors of opportunity will be opened unto them for the spread of Christ’s gospel.
→ PRAY THAT GOD WILL GLORIFY HIMSELF THROUGH THEIR MINISTRY.
Paul said that the Lord may be glorified, even as it is with you. Pray not only for the missionaries to focus solely on the glory of God, but that God will bless their faith and labor by manifesting His glory through their work.
→ PRAY FOR THEIR PHYSICAL AND SPIRITUAL SAFETY.
Paul said in verse 2 that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith. We should constantly pray for God’s protection over our missionary’s lives no matter where God has led them. Not just their physical well-being, but their spiritual well-being. The devil is working hard to keep men and women from taking the gospel abroad. He is working twice as hard to cause men and women, who have already surrendered, to leave their fields. We must pray!
I’ve heard it said many, many times, “Not everyone can go, but everyone can pray.” Well, it’s about time we start doing it! Let’s be faithful to pray for missionaries. Encourage them by letting them know you pray for them. (Most of our missionaries are listed on our website with links to their blogs/sites.)
