Quite possibly, the greatest missionary work in the world is the work of prayer. While one may never cross the seas to share the gospel with another tribe or people, he can pray. Frankly, one cannot even experience salvation apart from the power and influence of prayer. How many testimonies of changed lives included, at some point, the power of a praying mother, father, or pastor? We must pray for the lost. We cannot casually live our Christian lives without expressing, in deep prayer, an overwhelming burden and desire for the work of God’s grace in the heart of the lost.
In examination of my own need to improve my prayers for the unsaved, I recently searched certain Scriptures regarding the subject. I suggest from these verses seven ways to pray for the lost…
→ PRAY SPECIFICALLY, BY NAME, FOR THE UNSAVED.
Romans 10:1 – Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved. Make a list. Go through the list. Bring their name before the throne of God.
→ PRAY FOR OPEN DOORS TO SHARE THE GOSPEL.
Colossians 4:3-4 – Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds: That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak. Ask God to open doors of opportunity for you to give your testimony or share the gospel.
→ PRAY FOR THE LIGHT OF GOD’S WORD TO SHINE IN THEIR HEARTS AND OPEN THEIR EYES.
2 Corinthians 4:3-4 – But if our gospel be hid, it is hid to them that are lost: In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. The lost soul will not come to Christ unless the light of His Word shines unto them. We pray for God’s Word to open their eyes to His truth.
→ PRAY PASSIONATELY FOR THE GOSPEL SEEDS YOU’VE PLANTED IN THEIR LIFE.
Psalm 126:5-6 – They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him. Prayer, alone, is not the answer to reaching the unsaved. We must plant seeds through love, kindness, and even confrontation. Water those seeds with tears of genuine compassion for their soul.
→ PRAY CONTINUALLY, WITHOUT WAVERING, FOR THEIR SOUL.
Jeremiah 9:1 – Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people. Day and night…wow! How convicting to think of how little we pray for sinners.
→ PRAY FOR THE LORD TO SEND LABORERS INTO THE HARVEST OF THEIR LIFE.
Matthew 9:38 – Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest. Even in situations where geographical limitations hinder our witness, we can pray that God sends His servants to cross the paths of those in need of saving faith.
→ PRAY WITH FASTING.
Matthew 17:20-21 – If ye have faith as a grain of a mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting. As in any situation deemed impossible, fasting is the key that opens the door to God’s miraculous power. Ask Saul of Tarsus…no sinner is too impossible for God to reach!
